ROUND LAKE – The cats of Save-a-Pet in Grayslake have much to be thankful for.

Round Lake resident Rachel Bird, owner of Once Upon a Design, recently spent a year re-designing the cat room at the animal shelter.

“I knew the potential it could have and they were really on board with re-creating the room,” Bird said.

Bird, whose family adopted their dog from Save-a-Pet and were frequent visitors to the cat room, learned the shelter was looking for a volunteer designer to work on their room.

Given her background and her connection to the shelter, Bird volunteered to design the room and donated her services. As the project snowballed, Bird also got in touch with some of her contacts to get labor donated. Funds were raised by Save-a-Pet for the project.

“It’s like night and day what was done in there,” Bird said. “Literally, the cats are much more at peace and calm in the space.”
